Back Against The Wall - The Ritz

A power ballad that takes you through emotional volatility.

Following their singles When I Need You Most, Give Me A Sign and Only Time Will Tell, indie rock band The Ritz recently released their 4th single Back Against The Wall. It’s so far their slowest song and, at the same time, their most powerful and emotional one.

The band from Burton-On-Trent only formed last year and they’re trying to make their mark with their unique sound. Their latest single is definitely going to contribute towards that.

Back Against The Wall is an emotional ballad, taking you through a cycle of emotions you can experience when you find yourself in a difficult situation, wondering what next. The song starts with acoustic chord strumming, to accompany the sad emotion in the voice. As the emotions escalate from sadness to agony, the switch between acoustic strumming and electric guitar solos (2 of them), reflect the emotional volatility.

It goes from the sadness of observing the situation, to asking yourself to make a decision, to the explosion into agony of what might happen. The way it transitions from the verse into the chorus, somehow makes you want to belt it out with all the oxygen you have in your lungs, feeling every word of it.

It’s a song you can connect with and even get obsessed by. The lyrics are not just artistic, they’re not just spot on, they’re also unique, which is very difficult after the number of songs and poems that have already been written. At the same time, they’re maintaining an element of mystery, as to what exactly the situation is. It allows you to use your imagination and apply the description to alternative scenarios.

Back Against The Wall is the kind of song I can call an absolute banger. And it has perfect chemistry with Robbie’s voice. This song really deserves to be discovered. If it reaches the Radio DJ’s and the media with the big audiences, this song could be their breakthrough.

The Ritz are:

Robbie Joyce (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Finley Armitage (lead guitar), Seb Cook-Abbott (bass), and Tom Warrilow (drums).
