Emergency Break gig review: These boys are wild!

Are you looking for a fresh, wild energetic rock band with upbeat guitar solos and riffs and a confident charismatic frontman? I give you Emergency Break. A group of 6 young men who went to school together and decided to form a band. They're hoping to emerge as a new upcoming indie rock proposition and break into the music scene in 2024. At the age of 19, they have already played a considerable number of shows, they have released a single and they’re planning to release their 2nd one soon. They have even demonstrated their business skills, by organizing a music festival themselves.

Emergency Break live at The Macbeth
Leo singing with Joe playing guitar on his shoulders. Standard practice.

Their frontman, Leo, already shows he has everything it takes to become a great showman. I’ve seen confident young men, but not like that. You wouldn’t think the polite boy who was talking to ArtsyMix a few days ago, turns into an entertainment monster when he gets on stage. He knows how to guide the audience, how to lift them, to get them to join in, to control them. He even gets off the stage to mix with the crowd. He plays with people’s cameras, he interacts with everyone. He takes ownership of the whole place. And it definitely helps that the band are creating a distinctive rock sound with not one, not two, but three electric guitars on stage. There’s no such thing as too many electric guitars.

The calm before the storm. Left to right: Oran, James, Ewan, Leo, Joe, Fin.

The stage at The Macbeth was too small for the 6 of them. It would have been too small if they were standing still. And they don’t stand still.

Their set contained 7 originals, including their first single Pyro, as well as Outsiders which will become their 2nd single very soon.

They started with Hometown, before performing Pyro.

They continued with 2 more original songs, Can You Feel It and Everything You Make I Break.

They covered Teddy Picker by Arctic Monkeys, performing it with more intensity.

Then, there was a surprise song that wasn’t planned. A cover of Boys In The Better Land by Fontaines D.C. That’s when Leo decided to get Joe on his shoulders during the performance. Because why not. It was probably unplanned and it added to the entertainment. The crowd loved it.

They continued with 2 more originals, It’s Over and another song with the rather dodgy title, Irish Ecstassy. But it’s not a reference to pills from Ireland. It’s in fact about heartbreak.

Outsiders

This song was going to be their 2nd single, but they changed their mind and they're going with Everything You Make I Break instead. It's going to be on EP though. The song is called Outsiders and they have been playing it for quite some time now.

They finished with another cover, Tick Tick Boom by The Hives. They made it more intense than the original and faster too. Leo went even wilder, raising the excitement even more. At the same time, he took his bossing of the crowd to a new level. There was actually an encore in the end, but they had already played the extra song they had.

Conclusion

If this is the omen of what we're going to see from this band in years to come, it's definitely looking very promising. At the age of 19, the members of Emergency Break have the music skills, the confidence and the creativity to offer a memorable live music experience. Now we just need them to write more songs. And don’t get the wrong idea from their antics during their performances. They seem to be just a group of sound young men who like their music and they like it loud. I avoided using the term “on stage” because, with the exception of the drummer, they don’t remain on the actual stage at all times during the show.

This is the year when they will push to start breaking into the music scene. This is the beginning of their first long run of live shows. This is when Emergency Break are about to emerge.
