Single review: Freedom

Freedom is a banger that will be stuck in your head all the time. All the time.

Through the cracks in the walls, through his cryptic, mysterious, artistic lyrics which always fascinate his fans, Harvey Jay Dodgson created a brilliant song, called Freedom. As he said on his social media accounts, when he wrote the song together with guitarist Charlie, it started its journey as "left, right, feet up". It's not unusual for a songwriter to have a certain initial idea of a song and then develop it in a totally different way, taking it to a different direction with a different meaning.

As he developed the song, at the same time he created the concept that the song represents: Freedom of the mind / marching towards freedom, as he explained in his interview with ArtsyMix in December 2023:

The song that started life as "left, right, feet up", developed into an absolute banger which can get stuck in your head. A proper rock anthem which is already popular with fans in live shows. The song had been waiting to be freed to the world for quite a long time. Harvey played it in live shows for many months and his fans already knew the lyrics by the time he performed it at The Camden Assembly at the end of November 2023. By that time, the song had been recorded. Harvey had a plan to release it a bit later. He probably wanted to release it closer to his Headline Show in his hometown Portsmouth, this Thursday 28 March 2024.

The road to Freedom

Harvey Jay Dodgson created a video about the making of Freedom, showing parts of the production process in Germany. He was kind enough to send us the video, so you can have a little taste of how a song gets recorded.

Harvey Jay Dodgson has his Headline Show this Thursday 28/3/2024 at his home town, Portsmouth. Find all the information and link for tickets here.
