Single review: Get Me Started

Tom A Smith had a plan to create an anthem. He did exactly that.

Get Me Started is a song that Tom A Smith wrote for those who find it difficult to strike up a conversation with a stranger. In a post on Instagram he said “I’ve written a song for everyone who really struggles with talking to and meeting new people for the first time because small talk is hard”.

It’s yet another example of Tom A Smith sharing his struggles and emotions via his lyrics and being totally OK about them. He prefers to put everything out there for everyone to see, rather just keeping things inside. And the reality is, a lot of people can relate to his lyrics in many of his songs. A set list by Tom, with the new addition of Get Me Started, is pretty much a full cycle of emotions that people go through. From The Worst  Is Still To Come, Man Overboard, all the way up to Little Bits. The tricky part is that we don’t really know the order in which Tom has written those songs. But we do know that every one of those songs, came straight from emotions.

Having said all that, Get Me Started is not just a reflection of struggles. It’s also a song that is easy to pick up and sing along. This is the other element of Tom’s idea of a good concept: A song that can get the crowd to join in, creating a good vibe in live shows. A song created with the atmosphere in the room in mind. That’s the case with Man Overboard and Like You Do. Get Me Started is another addition to that category. Tom had a plan to create an anthem and he did just that. He talked about that plan in his interview with ArtsyMix in January 2024:

Tom has 2 key principles when it comes to sharing his emotions and struggles through his songs:

1. You should just accept and embrace who you are and how you feel. There’s nothing wrong with that.
2. Emotions and struggles make good concepts for songs.
